Event recorded with the CMS detector in 2012 at a proton-proton centre of mass energy of 8 TeV. The event shows characteristics expected from the decay of the SM Higgs boson to a pair of photons (dashed yellow lines and green towers). The event could also be due to known standard model background processes.

Here is a delightful poem written by Erich Harth, an Emeritus Professor from Syracuse University, in the wake of the discovery announcement from CMS and ATLAS.

A World without the Higgs

We eagerly await to learn
The latest thrilling news from CERN:
The Higgs did finally arrive.
The Standard Model is alive!

But, if you'd ask me to withdraw
A single universal law,
I'd say inertia is a pain
Like hurricanes, like acid rain.
I ask you, do we need molasses
To gum up space and slow down masses?

No rock would stay to stub your toes on
If not for that accursed boson.
Before you know, the rock will fly
Light as the wind into the sky
Beyond the clouds and out of sight,
Already at the speed of light.
